It was the early 80's. I was working for a tiny radio station in Northeast South Dakota. I had been covering a basketball game about 45 miles away from home/the station, and it was nearly midnight before I was on my way home. I was driving down a flat stretch of road... if you've ever been in Eastern South Dakota, you know what I'm talking about... even on a moonlit night, you can see for miles down the road. I noticed up the road that there was another car, coming in the other direction... no, that wasn't right. The closer I got, the more obvious it was that the car was parked on the side of the road. I wondered if the car had stalled, and began to slow down... after all, there was nobody else for miles, I wanted to help if I could. When I pulled alongside the car, I could clearly see the "driver." The face was somewhat human, but glowing white!! The eyes budged, and the lips were curled into a much too wide smile... and it continued to face forward (thank God, if it had turned to look at me, I probably would've lost it). By reflex, I hit the gas and got about a quarter of a mile up the road before I came to my senses and thought I must have been imagining things... there was someone back there, and they probably needed my help. I turned the car around and saw... nothing. Zip, zero, nothing!
As I said before, this is very flat land, no trees, nothing to obscure the view, and it was a bright, moonlit night. There was nowhere for the car to go but up the road, and if it had I surely would've seen it. It was just gone.
I did some asking around in the days that followed, and it turns out that I'm not the first person to see this "ghost car." One person told me that the rumor was that it was the spirit of someone who crashed and died in that spot back in the 50's, but I could never find record of it. |
